fruit & vegetable pilot project for families

I feel lucky to be able to afford the weekly food shop, but I am aware many families can’t (especially with the current cost of living crisis), so long story short, in autumn 2021, I collected tons of unwanted apples in people’s gardens and orchards and turned them into apple juice at Chiltern Ridge, sold them locally and raised over £6,000. I wanted to turn this money into fruit and vegetable vouchers that families can use on a weekly basis via an independent grocer and started this December 2022.

This fruit and veg scheme is currently happening in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, UK. Families (who are on universal credit) can go to the grocer’s, R Harris & Sons, who have a stall every Tuesday and Saturday and claim their weekly £10 worth of fruit and veg.

I am working with Leighton Buzzard Children’s Centre who are being of great help in finding me these families that need that little extra support.

Photos below of some of the wonderful produce being bought and what parents have been making with it!

If you’d like to keep this project going and would like to donate any amount of money no matter how small, please get in touch.

From apples….to…apples?!?!

Meet Geoff.

He is the owner of R Harris & Sons in Leighton Buzzard who I am working with to deliver fruit and veg to families-in-need each week. I give him the list of families who are eligible for this scheme, he ticks their name off, they leave with delicious fruit and veg each week. Families have access to fresh produce, parents get out of the house and feel involved in their community and a local business also profits too - I consider that a win-win-win!
